Continuous Professional Development

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Continuous Professional Development (CPD)

One of the objectives of IMAU, in its constitution states as follows;

Article 3: The objectives for which the association is established are;

(i) To organize seminars, symposia, lectures and practical demonstrations for Continuing Professional Development of health care professionals and  for the promotion of Islamic medical care which includes submission to Allah’s will and continuously seeking and using health related scientific knowledge and wisdom given to health professionals by Allah as a privilege, in caring for patients and clients, fully conscious that it is Allah who is responsible for the outcome including cure and death and praying for His Mercy, Graciousness and Guidance during all processes of care.

Education plays a vital role in the development of a health professional. Islamic teachings encourage continuous education and professional development.

It was narrated by Anas bin Malik that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim.” [Sunan Ibn Mâjah (224) and others]

In line with our constitution, we are glad to inform you that the Islamic Medical Association of Uganda (IMAU) was accredited by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council (UMDPC) as one of the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) providers.  The UMDPC guidelines on this issue state as follows:

 Aim and Objectives of Continuing Professional Development

The aim of CPD is to continuously improve quality of care provided by the Medical and Dental practitioners to individuals, families and communities they serve.

a) To increase technical/professional knowledge in fields related to health professional practices, such as health care delivery, Leadership, management, communication, etc.

b) To improve skills needed for service delivery

c) To Influence attitudes of the Medical and Dental practitioners in the way they provide health care delivery in terms of Leadership, management, and communication at work.

The Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

Each registered Medical and Dental Practitioner shall be required to engage in CPD activities and accumulate 48 CEUs over a period of 12 months, of which ethics, professionalism, leadership and management, human rights or medico legal issues must contribute at least 5% every year.

The UMDPC  therefore requires each registered dental and medical practitioner to provide evidence of a minimum of 48 continuing education units (CEUs) in order to renew one’s Annual Practicing License (APL).

IMAU plans  to organize a series of CPD seminars for doctors, dentists and other healthcare professionals throughout the year, to assist them in accumulating the required CEUs, Insha’Allah. We call upon all health professionals to constantly visit our website for upcoming CPD events. The UMDPC guidelines can be accessed here.
